Reflecting on Crafting the Draft
It’s been several days since my last 30 day project Crafting the Draft ended, which has given me time and space for some reflection:
I do love writing. The more frequently I wrote, as exemplified by committing to write and post every day, the more I found my voice, enabling my personal style emerge.
Committing to write every day made the actual act of writing itself less scary, and left little room for fear of what other people would think of me because I had to get something in before the deadline – honoring my word took more precedent over wanting to be liked. This is why habits matter!
I ended up still finding myself writing at the end, rather than beginning, of the day for a multitude of reasons: prioritizing career work, working early shifts at the croissanterie, or working on life admin, because it’s very easy for me to get lost in hours of writing and then have little time for the other things I need to get done. I still haven’t quite found the balance of this yet, of how to prioritize an activity I enjoy while not losing sight (and time) of my other goals. If it’s something that I love, shouldn’t it be easy to prioritize?
I miss posting every day. But one of the reasons why I stopped doing that is because oftentimes I’d find myself doing a lazy post (hobbling together something last minute) or wanting to write something meaningful but not having the brain space to pull it together and prioritizing time sleeping over time writing. And I want to write longer form, more reflective posts, again.
So what’s next?
Write at least 5 min every day on the computer (as opposed to journaling in my notebook), whether that’s journaling in my long ass Word document covering the past two years (it takes up way too much memory space on Chrome) or posting a short blog or postcards post (again, a reminder to just do it and not get caught up in the perfection). Having writing on the computer makes it easier to reflect back (rather than try to interpret my crappy handwriting) and piece together writing for future posts.
Post one long form post on Mondays, at least once a week. I still need to decide a day for it because having a specific day will make it easier. this will probably be Monday. [updated to reflect]
Post one short form post on Fridays, at least once a week. This can be postcards from my travels with light commentary, brief reflections on current going-ons, or random musings that would be fun to share.
